The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is the UK’s biggest citizen science wildlife survey. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people take one hour, over one weekend in January, to count the birds that they can see in their outdoor space. It is easy, fun, free and a great way to connect with nature. Most importantly, it helps us to see how our garden birds are faring. We are so lucky here at Warren Forest to have an abundance of bird life.
I chose to wait until the next dry, fair day and that happened to be Sunday 1st February. It was a beautiful misty start to the morning, with blue skies and more than a glimpse of sunshine. I used my Merlin app to identify the birdsong as I walked through Jeffrey Wood and around the Putting Green, I wasn’t disappointed. This was the list of beautiful birdsong recorded;
Chaffinch, Dunnock, Tawny Owl, Great Spotted Wooddpecker, Robin, Graylag Goose, Lapwing, Greenfinch, Jackdaw & Blue Tit!
It certainly felt like spring is stirring, as the snowdrops are carpeting our verges and sheltering behind the dry stone walling.
Lots of landscaping, tarmac and road repairs alongside woodland management continues to be ongoing during our closed season. As the days are lengthening, we look forward to preparing for your return!
